Because our jaws are smaller than those of our ancestors, our wisdom teeth do not have enough room to fit in our mouths properly. We eat softer foods now, therefore, we do not require the additional molars for tough chewing. When wisdom teeth begin to emerge, they may become impacted, crowding other teeth and causing them to chip or break.

Another common problem occurs when wisdom teeth become impacted. This means that the tooth begins to grow in sideways rather than straight up, a condition which can damage the adjacent molar and cause pain and swelling.

The only way to know with certainty the condition of the wisdom teeth before they emerge is through an x-ray. This will show the position of the teeth and allow your dentist to determine if a problem exists. When the wisdom teeth are growing in straight with sufficient room, they will cause no problems. Rarely do wisdom teeth grow in properly and remain healthy. Removing wisdom teeth keeps the rest of your mouth healthy and your other teeth properly positioned.

Removal of Wisdom Teeth

If a problem does exist, it is best to have the wisdom teeth removed at around 17 years of age. Removal will be easier and recovery more rapid then since the tooth's roots usually have not fully developed yet. Wisdom tooth removal is usually an outpatient procedure. The type and length of surgery will depend upon the stage of tooth development.

You will be given a sedative to help you relax during the surgery. You will also receive an anesthetic to numb the area around you wisdom teeth. Once you are fully relaxed and your mouth is numb, the surgery will begin. If your wisdom teeth are impacted, an incision will be made to remove the teeth and you will receive stitches. If they have emerged through the gum, they will probably be removed with no incision.
